GrimSkunk are a Canadian band that already exists since 1988 and have released more than 7 albums that made them heroes not only in their home country. After 20 years as one of Canada’s most enduring and respected rock bands, GrimSkunk has put together a collection of songs from their previous seven albums into a fabulous double CD release, titled Skunkadelic, for fans and collectors alike, complete with new artwork by their main artist Benoit Robitaille. Featuring both fan favorites and a few lesser known tracks, as well as cool new artwork, this should be a treat for GrimSkunk heads around the world. The album will be released in April 2011, accompanied by a series of tour dates in Canada before GrimSkunk head off to Europe to tour with their good friends and legendary psychedelic metal band Voivod!

Cassandra Steen – Mir So Nah (2011)

Germany‘s best-known soul singer presents her new album. Available as of April 29th.

“Mir So Nah” – the new album doesn’t come on as melancholy-minor like her previous one. Lively and bright sounds in major tones are to be heard instead. It must have something to do with Cassandra’s rise to success and self-confidence: ECHO-winner 2010 in the category “National Artist Rock/Pop”, Platin for the single “Stadt” (“City”) that was the biggest radio hit in 2009, and Gold for the album “Darum Leben Wir” (“That’s why we’re alive”).
The current album came into being in close cooperation with Adel Tawil (Ich+Ich), Xavier Naidoo, her Mentor, trailblazer and brotherly friend, and Moses Pelham. The beats are from The Krauts aus Berlin, who today create new pop music with Peter Fox and Marteria.
“Gebt alles” (“Give everything”), the first single album single, was released on April 1st and is captivating in its optimism and courage. The album unites heart and soul and surprises and pleases with its passion and liveliness. As from September 2011 fans are called upon to “get close” to CASSANDRA STEEN. On her “So Close To Me” tour.
She celebrated her debut at 17 years of age as duet partner on the album “Quadratur des Kreises” from Freundeskreis. The national breakthrough came however as lead singer of the trio GLASHAUS, together with Pelham. Three further successful albums were made. The single release “Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt” (hope dies last), was made together with Bushido and released in 2005. And the single “Stadt” (city), a collaboration with Adel Tawil of Ich+Ich, made it to *2 on the German Charts.

The folks at Mobile Fidelity pay their rent by releasing a lot of disposable pop, but then they redeem themselves with labors of love such as this. Sonically, there is not that much to shout about here, but that is not the point. The fact that this CD is eminently listenable shows that a lot of work went into getting it ready for release, because I cannot imagine that they started out with the best master tape in the world. Some of the music sounds a bit corny (that brings to mind an interesting blindfold test in a recent issue of Downbeat wherein along with dropping several other little bombshell statements, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown (April 18 1924 – September 10, 2005) was a Louisiana and Texan American blues musician. He was a highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, who played an impressive array of instruments such as guitar, fiddle, mandolin, viola as well as harmonica and drums. criticizes Armstrong for never really moving beyond Dixieland music),
but once you just relax a little bit and start enjoying the show, with Louis doing plenty of singing along with some shucking and jiving, all your troubles just seem to fade away. Thank you, Mobile Fidelity, for making this available.– KWN
